Government info is complicated. Here's what you really need to know:
💡What is it?
The Tax Code is your identification number in Italy - like a social security number. Without this code you can't do practically anything: no working, no renting, no bank account. It's completely free and you get it in minutes.
👤Who is it for?
Anyone who wants to live, work or study in Italy must have a tax code. Even newborn babies need one. If you're a foreigner, this is the first thing you must request when you arrive in Italy - even before the residence permit.
⏰When?
Request it as soon as you arrive in Italy. There are no strict deadlines, but you'll need it immediately for any procedure. You can get it the same day if you go to the Tax Agency office.
🛠️How to do it?
Go to the nearest Tax Agency office (Agenzia delle Entrate) with your passport. Fill out form AA4/8 (available there or download online). In 10-15 minutes they'll print your laminated card for free. If you're already abroad, you can request it at the Italian consulate.
⚠️Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ✗Don't confuse with the Health Card (that comes by mail later)
- ✗Always bring the original passport, photocopies aren't enough
- ✗The code NEVER expires - you don't need to renew it
- ✗You can calculate it online, but you still need the official printed document
